frippp: Appears in Chris Beetles' 1986 exhibition catalogue: (Dimensions given with height first)
The Eight 'Kaleidoscope' pictures on loan from the Bethlem Royal Hospital, catalogued by Patricia Allderidge. General note: These pictures have been shown together in one amount for many years and were presumably arranged like this by Dr Maclay. Although it is known that he found 'some' pictures by Louis Wain in a shop in Camden Hill it is not certain how many of these were included, and nothing is known of their origin or when any of them were painted. The order in which they are seen here is entirely artificial. 107. PATTERN Coloured pencil and paper 8 7/8" x 6 7/8" It is debatable whether this pattern is based on a cat at all, though taken in sequence with the preceding one it seem to contain the same rudimentary shapes of ears and eyes. (This image also appears in the book upside-down. Since there is no obvious discernible image such as a cat, it is up to the viewers interpretation which direction the image should be viewed in) |

ORIENTAL CAT PATTERN WITH TRIANGULAR EYES Bodycolour on paper 8 7/8" x 6 3/4" This design in particular has a Japanese feel to it and stylistically it recalls the Fin de Siecle period. SEMI-ABSTRACT CAT PATTERN Bodycolour on paper 8 7/8" x 6 7/8" It is just possible to distinguish a cat theme in this design, though it is unlikely that it would be found if the picture were seen completely out of context (Catland site note: this is obviously a cat idk what theyre talking about) |

ELECTRIC CAT Bodycolour on paper 8 7/8" x 6 7/8" Although the jagged lines in this picture are not necessarily an attempt to symbolise an electric current, it may b e significant that Louis Wain held some very strange views on the subject of cats and electricity. As early as 1898, for example, he had expounded the theory that a cat's main object in washing was to complete an electrical circuit, thus generating heat and a pleasing sensation in the fur. |

ORIENTAL CAT PATTERN WITH ROUND EYES Bodycolour on paper 8 7/8" x 6 7/8" The three bodycolour designs, and to a lesser extent the two in coloured pencil, are reminiscent of late nineteenth century textile designs. Wain's grandfather had been a silk manufacturer, his father was a traveller for a firm of drapers, and his mother designed church fabrics, so this association is probably not fanciful. |

PERPLEXED CAT Chalk, pastel and coloured pencil on paper 8 7/8" x 6 7/8" The background of this picture is similar in style, though less precisely drawn, to the supposed 'wallpaper pattern' in no. 108 (Ginger Cat) (https://catland.distin.org/post/view/4751) |

frippp: Is not pictured, but mentioned in Chris Beetles' 1986 exhibition catalogue: (Dimensions given with height first)
On loan from the Bethlem Royal Hospital, catalogued by Patricia Allderidge. 108. GINGER CAT Coloured pencil on paper Inscribed on verso: F. Deuxbery, Mr. Louis Wain. Sept 1931 Date: September 1931 10" x 7" The Bethlem Royal Hospital and the Maudsley Hospital Health Authority (Guttman-Maclay Collection) This picture was drawn at Napsbury Hospital where the previous owner, Mr Deuxbery, was one of the nurses who looked after Wain. The background is presumably an example of the 'wallpaper patterns', so-called by the staff of Napsbury: in the early 30s Wain is said to have stopped drawing cats at all for a while, and drawn only these patterns, though he soon returned to cats. |
