Louis Wain Fact #19:
Louis Wain’s likeness had once appeared in the Illustrated London News in an advert for Phospherine, a ‘nerve tonic’ that had been advertised to treat depression, influenza, hysteria, exhaustion, and basically every other ailment. In the ad Wain states it “is a good pick-me-up, improves one’s appetite and possesses very striking invigorating properties.. I am now able to comfortably work more hours without the slightest detrimental effect.’

The Eight 'Kaleidoscope' pictures on loan from the Bethlem Royal Hospital, catalogued by Patricia Allderidge.
General note: These pictures have been shown together in one amount for many years and were presumably arranged like this by Dr Maclay. Although it is known that he found 'some' pictures by Louis Wain in a shop in Camden Hill it is not certain how many of these were included, and nothing is known of their origin or when any of them were painted. The order in which they are seen here is entirely artificial.
105. SEMI-ABSTRACT CAT PATTERN
Bodycolour on paper
8 7/8" x 6 7/8"
It is just possible to distinguish a cat theme in this design, though it is unlikely that it would be found if the picture were seen completely out of context
(Catland site note: this is obviously a cat idk what theyre talking about)
