FAQ

Q: What is the copyright status on Wain's artwork?

A: Long story short, every image featured on the site is under the public domain. What does this mean you can do with it? Well, anything! You can use his artwork in your game, make designs based off Wain's, and .. Don't feel afraid to contact us and share, we love seeing how the community uses Wain's work in interesting and transformative contexts!

A large portion of the images here are our own scans, many from original century-old ephemera in our personal collection. Some images come from modern republications, however we don't have any work that was transformed (we strive for an accurate retrospective of the works of his life) so they fall under the laws of the original publication.

In the UK, written and visual copyright lasts for 70 years after the death of the author. Louis Wain died in 1939, and many of his collaborators even earlier, which puts us quite clear in the UK. In the US, copyright works similarly, although some works have a 95 year limit. All but one of Louis Wain's books were published before 1930, so this is again no issue. Many countries have similar rules regarding copyright, and we are confident that all Wain's work will be freely available nearly anywhere.

Q: I have Wain artwork I'd like to share, how can I do so?

There are still many works we have never seen, and many that could benefit from seeing a higher-quality version uploaded to the website. If you think you could help us in any way, please send us an E-mail and we will happily chat about your artwork.

Q: I see a login, how do I register for the site?

You may have noticed the Login page on the screen and been curious how to sign up. This login is currently only for the administrators of the site, and registrations are currently closed. It has been this way since the site was started.

We would eventually like to open this in the future to garner a community effort and give users a way to organise their own lists of artwork from the site. As of now, we are way too focused on getting everything we can out there before finding the time to implement and moderate this feature. It will come in a distant future update, so please stay tuned.

In the meantime, there are online communities such as on Reddit and Discord that you could join to talk with other Wain fans.

Q: I'd like more information on a Wain artwork I have.. OR
Q: Looking for a specific book or illustration, can you help?

Yes! We have become very familiar with his larger body of work, and know how to navigate it extremely well. We have even more books and archives that we have not yet made public, due to the sheer amount of effort. These will be uploaded in due time. There is a large chance that in our offline collection, or buried here where only we can find it, we have some nugget of information that will hopefully be of use! Please email us and we would love to aid your thirst for knowledge.

Q: Does this site need support?

We appreciate those who offer, but we don't have anything set up at the moment and have no need to. We hope to never have to introduce advertisements on the website as well. As of now, we are small: the costs for running the website are small as well.

Q: Why are you doing this?

Years ago I was introduced to the work of Wain through fans of his in the music scene, and I was amazed at the work of his I saw. Unfortunately, it was not very accessible, I started this collection to personally bring together as much of his works I could. The website runs not on money, but a pure passion and adoration for the work of Louis Wain, and a hope that many future generations can see his work and be touched by it, as it was a hundred years ago.
