Despite the fact that his annuals were aimed primarily towards children, he often used them to voice his political stances, such as his support of suffrage and dislike of socialism. This may have been a cause for the troubled relations between him and his publishers, of which he went through many.

Wain was an advocate of families taking their pets with them and opposed the apparently then-common notion of letting them fend on their own while their owners were away.
